Abstract: The Myrtaceae family consists of several plant species rich in essential oils, the best known being Eugenia uniflora L., native to Brazil and popularly known as Brazilian cherry or pitanga. It has been researched as diversified therapeutic properties already achieved, but there are few research that use the essential oil, which is rich in biologically active compounds. The objective of this study was to identify the essential oil chemistry in pitangueira leaves with two fruits (purple and red), to evaluate the antioxidant activity. The essential oils were extracted from the leaves of Eugenia uniflora L by the hydrodistillation method with the Clevenger apparatus. The free radical capture method ABTS and DPPH in the antioxidant activity assays. The composition of the oils varied between the two fruit phenotypes, as well as antioxidant activity, where a purple pitanga was more potentiated to capture free radicals. Given the results, it is possible to consider that the essential paper presents great bioactivity, and may be used in future formulations of medicines, cosmetics our products that provide health improvement.
