Abstract: ABSTRACT: The implantation of Caryocar brasiliense and Myracrodrum urundeuva seedlings in forest recovery areas or in intercropped crops faces problems related to competition with weeds. Despite the relevance of the subject, weed competition for these species is little studied, especially when related to competition with Urochloa brizantha, the main forage crop cultivated in Brazil and a common weed in forest recovery areas. This review addresses descriptive, geographic, biological and growth aspects of M. urundeuva and C. brasiliense in relation to interference and competition with U. brizantha. In the literature, studies on weed competition with forest species are widely reported for eucalyptus and pine in the initial stages of growth, with few approaches to native Brazilian species. In the case of Cerrado species, such as C. brasiliense and M. urundeuva, slow growth and adaptation to the environmental edaphoclimatic conditions must be taken into account in their establishment and in competitive relationships with other species. Under limited conditions of water and nutrient availability in the soil, a common situation in the Brazilian Cerrado, competition caused by U. brizantha can make the establishment unfeasible and/or delay the growth of M. urundeuva and C. brasiliense. The rapid growth and high size of U. brizantha, compared to seedlings of the two tree species, can also lead to competition for light. Studies on competition between invasive grasses and native Cerrado species, at different stages of the trees' life cycle, are necessary to understand the impacts of the weed on the species of interest and to enable assertive management practices for cultivation and forest restoration with M. urundeuva and C. brasiliense.
