Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the absorption and drying of different materials used as poultry litter. The absorption rate, drying capacity, and carbon/nitrogen ratio of Shavings (S), crushed corn cobs (CC), rice husks (RH), Marandu grass hay (MH), sugarcane bagasse (SB), and banana straw (BS) were evaluated, the latter as a possible alternative for poultry farmers. The first stage of the study consisted of making a pool of each sample. In the second stage, the moisture content of the materials was standardized at 3%. In the third, 7 repetitions per material, each weighing 20 g, were submerged in water for 12 hours. In the fourth, each soaked material was weighed every 6 hours for a 24-hour cycle. In the fifth and final stage, C/N ratio tests were carried out on all the samples. For the evaluation of the absorption rate and carbon: nitrogen ratio, the experimental design was entirely randomized, with six materials and seven repetitions and six materials and five repetitions, respectively, with the means being compared using the Tukey test. To study the drying capacity, a regression analysis was carried out to evaluate the drying behavior over time and an ANOVA, with the means of the treatments compared at each time point using the Tukey test. There was a significant effect (p<0.05) between CC and RH for absorption. The other treatments were not affected. For drying capacity, S, RH, BS, and SB showed similar behavior (p>0.05). Significant effects were found for the C/N ratio (p<0.05) between SB, S and RH. It can be concluded that all the materials tested in this study can be used as poultry litter, either because of their ability to absorb moisture (BS, SB, or CC) or because of their drying capacity (RH and S).
