Abstract: The article addresses the theme of democratic management in Brazilian public schools. It is already guaranteed in legal aspects and in literature. However, there is still a gap between the discourses and legal provisions and the effective practices of democratic management in a participatory manner involving the school community. This writing aims to critically reflect on the possibilities for the implementation of the principle of democratic management in Brazilian public basic education schools. The methodology considers qualitative research reviewing documents and relevant literature for the consolidation of the reflective theoretical framework. Speaking of theoretical foundation, in addition to the official documents of the Brazilian Ministry of Education, it draws on the thinking of Lück, Libâneo, Paro, among other scholars. The results show a school management that expands and surpasses the limits of school administration; legal and theoretical support provides administrative and legal security, however, practices of democratic school management are still not consolidated, presenting themselves as fragile due to the minimal effective participation of the school community. It is concluded that there is a need for training that consolidates participatory democratic management with the active presence of all educational actors.
