• Abstract: Surgical site infections are important negative indicators of quality of care, also becoming an impediment to patient safety. In view of this, the Ministry of Health developed the “Safe surgeries save lives” protocol, which advocates the stimulation of good methods to reduce morbidity and mortality associated with inadequate surgical practices. The aim of this study is to highlight the importance of implementing the safe surgery protocol to ensure patient safety and quality of care. This is a literature review, of a narrative type, which aims to describe safe surgery and its protocols, from a theoretical point of view, through materials that have already been published on the topic in question, through analysis and interpretation of the literature . The inclusion criteria were: articles in Portuguese and English; published between 2020 and 2024 and which addressed the themes proposed for this research, review-type studies made available in full. The exclusion criteria were: duplicate articles, available in abstract form, which did not directly address the proposal studied and which did not meet the other inclusion criteria. The checklist provides greater security for the team, enables the standardization of services and routine, encourages the team to worry about patient safety and minimizes friction caused by unexpected situations. The applicability of the checklist for safe surgery is of great relevance, however, combined with this strategy, professionals must be interested in implementing these actions, focusing on patient safety.
