Abstract: Procrastination is a way of postponing the fulfillment of important tasks and it is considered a failure in the self‑regulation process. Procrastination is strongly associated with task aversiveness, task delay, stress, lack of self-efficacy, and impulsiveness, as well as anxiety, perfectionism, and depression. Therefore, the study of this topic is relevant. The goal of this article is to present the causes and consequences of procrastination and, also, to discuss the results of some experiments developed by Princeton University researchers that showed that the decisions people make for future selves and other people are similar to each other and different from their decisions for present selves. The results of these studies were correlated and compared to the effects, in general, of procrastination in people’s lives.
