Abstract: Early neutering in dogs is widely used as a contraceptive and population control method, in addition to offering benefits such as reducing mammary neoplasms in female dogs and preventing reproductive diseases. However, recent studies have pointed out possible associated risks, such as an increased incidence of joint disorders, urinary incontinence and the development of certain neoplasms, depending on the breed and age at neutering. Thus, it has been found that surgical neutering reduces the incidence of some health conditions in the animal and increases the incidence of others, compared to dogs that remain intact. This paper reviews the scientific literature on the positive and negative impacts of early neutering, highlighting the need for informed and individualized decisions for each case, considering the benefits, risks and specific characteristics of each animal.
