Abstract: In 2018, the Pesquisa Nacional por Amostra de Domicílios (Pnad) identified 11 million illiterate individuals aged 15 or older in Brazil. To address this educational demand, it is the task of Adult and Youth Education (EJA) educators to adopt materials for learning mediation that not only correspond to educational and learning needs but also engage with contemporary society through current themes that stimulate critical-social thinking. One of the defining features of Carolina Maria de Jesus' literature and life is contemporaneity. Even though her life and writing are set in the 20th century, her themes and experiences remain relevant and urgent topics for debate in today's society, such as hunger, racism, and social inequality. Considering these aspects, this experiential report focuses on a sequence of didactic and reflective activities being developed in 2023 as part of the Proef1 project, an extension project situated at the Faculdade de Educação da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais . These activities have been highly productive and positive, aiming to position Carolina Maria de Jesus as a tool for critical and reflective literacy among young adults.
