Abstract: Introduction: The relationship between work and the illness process, whether physical or mental, has always been an extremely relevant issue for society. Among diseases related to certain external factors, cancer presents several examples. It is estimated that its prevalence will increase even more with the aging of the population and in some specific professions. Objectives: Discuss the risk of developing skin cancer in professionals chronically exposed to the Sun and the role of public policies. Methods: Theoretical essay of a reflective nature, based on the discursive formulation of the theme, substantiated by national and international scientific literature relating to the topic under study. Results: The skin is the largest organ in the human body. It is estimated that a growing increase in life expectancy in the world population is associated with an increase in the incidence of skin cancer. The development of skin cancer is mainly associated with chronic sun exposure. The most vulnerable professions include construction workers, street cleaners, postmen, firefighters, fishermen, self-employed professionals in beach commerce, among others. Current means of sun protection, such as the use of sunscreens and appropriate clothing, contribute to the prevention of actinic damage and skin cancer. Awareness of habits aimed at preventing skin cancer characterizes behavioral changes in the individual. With access to adequate information, it is possible to reconcile occupational and recreational sun exposure with preventing the development of skin cancer. Conclusion: The engagement of public policies in this context is extremely important for a better understanding of efficient photoprotective measures to prevent the development of skin cancer. In this aspect of awareness, the role of public policies assumes the responsibility of promoting health and engaging the individual's personal participation in empowering their rights in relation to the provision of photoprotection measures.
