Abstract: Fishing is considered one of the oldest and most important sources of food and income for humanity. Believing that participatory management with society is the most assured way to ensure sustainability between biodiversity, traditional fishing communities, and aquatic environments, this research aimed to identify historical events that contributed to the development of fishing activities in Itacaré, BA, as a basis for planning and managing artisanal fishing in alignment with the needs of the traditional community and sustainable development. This study is characterized as descriptive-exploratory with a qualitative-quantitative approach from an ethnomethodological perspective, using participatory methods such as the historical calendar and techniques such as direct observation and semi-structured interviews. A total of 20 fishermen and fisherwomen were interviewed in three meetings, along with municipal public servants such as the Secretary of the Environment and district directors of environment and fishing. The combination of different techniques allowed for the connection of various data, highlighting the dynamics in which fishing developed and how it currently takes place. The diagnosis revealed that the community possesses vast ecological knowledge, cultural richness, tradition, and oral history of the fishing culture, showing high resilience and resistance to various challenging situations. In light of these threats, the data revealed that the implementation of the Marine Extractive Reserve (RESEX-Itacaré) is of utmost urgency for the community to continue practicing its traditional activities.
