Abstract: Summary. Problems with food waste have been causing great difficulties for large institutions, such as universities, as waste that is disposed of incorrectly can cause numerous negative impacts on the environment, and thereby raising the costs of universities with transport and proper disposal. of that material. Therefore, to reduce costs and take advantage of part of these materials, more sustainable measures can be implemented, such as transforming this organic matter into biofertilizers or biogas. Thus, several technologies have been used for this purpose, one of which is the biodigester. This study deals with dimensioning a biodigester and verifying the potential of biogas production from organic food waste from the University Restaurant of the Federal Rural University of the semi-arid (UFERSA), on the Mossoró campus. For this sizing, a fraction of volatile solids of 23% was adopted, thus estimating an average daily production of methane gas of around 7.1 m3. This volume of gas generated can offset about 18% of the demand for LPG that is necessary for the production of lunch meals.
