Abstract: The objective of this study was to prepare and characterize a new bioadsorbent from spent leaves of Cymbopogon citratus, popularly known as lemongrass, for use in the removal of the drug hydroxychloroquine (HCQ), an emerging pollutant of high concern. The bioadsorbent was prepared using hot water, in a process similar to the preparation of tea and subsequent drying. The material was characterized by N2 physisorption, XRD, FTIR and SEM and the efficiency of the bioadsorbent was evaluated in a batch regime in the removal of HCQ. The bioadsorbent showed characteristics of mesopores, amorphous structure, with the presence of cellulose, lignin and hemicelluloses and a morphology consistent with the raw material used. The adsorption capacity of the material was 8,712 mg g-1 after 180 minutes. The standard bioadsorbent is an adsorbent with potential for application in adsorption systems to remove emerging pollutants.
