Abstract: Beriberi was scientifically described for the first time by Jacob Bontius, it is a disease characterized by lack of thiamine and it’s considered a deficiency disease. It can be classified into dry beriberi, wet beriberi, shoshin beriberi and Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome. It is a pathology that produces different signs or symptoms and it can cause disabling conditions and even death. Its diagnosis is essentially clinical and the treatment consists of the administration of thiamine intravenously, intramuscularly or orally. This study aims to report the case of an 84-year-old patient hospitalized with a urinary tract infection, who presented symptoms and clinical signs suggestive of hypovitaminosis B1. A therapeutic test with thiamine was performed by which it was possible to see an improvement of the patient's symptoms and to indorse the diagnosis for this disease.
