Abstract: Aging is a natural process that entails several physiological changes, such as decreased muscle mass (sarcopenia), loss of strength, flexibility, and balance, as well as changes in joints, bones, and cardiovascular and nervous systems. These changes can lead to functional dependence and reduced quality of life. Physical exercise, in general, and functional training, in particular, have emerged as essential tools to mitigate the negative effects of aging. Regular exercise promotes improved functional capacity, autonomy, mental health, and social well-being in older adults. This exploratory literature review analyzed the benefits of functional training for older adults, focusing on improving functional capacity, mental health, and preventing chronic diseases. The research highlighted the growing elderly population and the importance of interventions that promote healthy and active aging. Functional training, by simulating everyday movements such as sitting and standing, climbing stairs and carrying groceries, contributes to the maintenance and improvement of functional capacity, allowing the elderly to perform their daily activities with greater ease and safety. In addition, functional training has been shown to be effective in preventing and treating sarcopenia, improving balance and flexibility and preventing falls, which are common in this population. Regular practice of functional training has also been shown to be effective in preventing and treating chronic diseases common in the elderly, such as high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus and osteoporosis. Functional exercises can help control blood pressure, improve insulin sensitivity and increase bone mineral density, contributing to the overall health and well-being of older adults. Adherence to functional training by older adults is a crucial factor for the success of the intervention. Individualized training, professional supervision and a supportive social environment are factors that contribute to greater adherence and motivation among older adults to practice functional exercises. Given the numerous benefits of functional training for older adults, it is essential that physical education professionals act in the prescription and supervision of functional training programs adapted to the individual needs of each older adult, aiming to promote healthy and active aging.
