Abstract: ABSTRACT: The study of bacterial resistance stands out as a crucial global public health concern, as the indiscriminate use of antibiotics drives the selection of resistant bacteria, limiting therapeutic options and increasing mortality. This phenomenon, resulting from genetic mutations and the exchange of genetic material between bacteria, is exacerbated by the hospital environment, where immunocompromised patients are more susceptible to infections. The emergence of multi-resistant strains and superbugs makes treatment more complex, potentially leading to a return to pre-antibiotic times with devastating consequences for public health. Moreover, the economic impact is substantial, especially for health systems like the SUS, increasing costs with prolonged and complex treatments. Prevention and control strategies require a holistic approach, including the education of health professionals and patients, accurate identification of microorganisms, and the development of new antimicrobials. International cooperation and the implementation of integrated measures are crucial to tackling this challenge and ensuring the effectiveness of future medical care.
