Abstract: The increasing impact of greenhouse gas emissions and subsequent environmental concerns have spurred significant advancements in rechargeable battery technology, particularly concerning sustainable urban mobility. The utilization of bidirectional capabilities in electric vehicles as a distributed energy resource reflects a promising trend in energy management strategies to address the intermittency of renewable generation. However, challenges such as battery degradation due to increased charge and discharge cycles must be addressed. This article aims to elucidate the current technological landscape of lithium-ion batteries, delineate their specifications and outline the primary degradation mechanisms within the context of urban mobility. Given the current scenario, it becomes imperative to deeply comprehend their operation, degradation mechanisms, as well as the challenges faced by controllers integrating this technology into the grid with bidirectional energy exchanges.
