Abstract: Introduction: Pharmaceutical care in public health has become increasingly important for promoting health and ensuring access to safe and effective treatments. It encompasses medication dispensing, rational management of therapeutic resources, patient counseling, and collaboration with other healthcare professionals. Although it has advanced significantly, challenges remain, such as the need for more robust policies, enhanced professional training, and overcoming disparities in medication access. There is still work to be done to improve the effectiveness and integration of these services within the healthcare system. Objective: To investigate the advances and challenges of pharmaceutical care within the Unified Health System (SUS). Method: A narrative literature review was conducted, searching the databases PubMed, Medline, and SciELO. This strategic research study employed descriptive objectives, a qualitative approach, and exploratory research techniques to acquire new insights into the population regarding this topic through health descriptors. Main Results: The review of advances and challenges in pharmaceutical care within public health revealed significant progress, such as the integration of pharmacists into healthcare teams, improved medication management, and enhanced practices through ongoing education. However, challenges persist, including the need for more robust public policies, improved professional training, and overcoming disparities in medication access, particularly in resource-limited areas. These results highlight both the achievements made and the ongoing need for continued efforts to enhance the effectiveness and equity of pharmaceutical services in public health.
