Abstract: Ketoconazole shampoo has potent activity against dermatophytes and yeasts, providing relief from itching and flaking associated with seborrheic dermatitis, dandruff or pityriasis. Due to its physicochemical characteristics, ketoconazole requires care to be incorporated into cosmetics, especially for reasons of solubility and stability. This drug is widely prescribed and used throughout the world, whether in industrial or magistral form. The aim of this study was to characterize the physicochemical properties and assess the in vitro irritability by HET-CAM of ketoconazole shampoos sold in the city of Teresina-PI. A survey of pharmacies in Teresina-PI was carried out, with subsequent sampling and random selection of pharmacies to obtain ketoconazole shampoos. The samples were characterized in terms of organoleptic aspects, identification of analytes by UV/VIS, density, foam index, pH and centrifuge test. In addition, in vitro irritancy analysis was carried out using the alternative HET - CAM method. The sampling yielded 25 pharmacies, 5 of which were selected and identified A-E. The shampoos analyzed were within the expected standards in terms of organoleptic characteristics, density and foam index, while pH analyses showed that the products did not comply. Only product C had an acid pH, which is the optimum pH for solubilizing ketoconazole. As for the irritancy test, all the shampoos showed some degree of skin irritation, leading the researchers to suggest that the product label should indicate the precautions for use, especially if the product comes into contact with the eye area.
