Abstract: Objective: To analyze the dimensions and factors associated with thirst in children undergoing surgical procedures in the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), assessing the effectiveness of management strategies for symptom relief. Methodology: A qualitative, descriptive, and field study conducted in a private hospital in southern Santa Catarina. The sample consisted of 15 children, aged 3 to 12 years, who underwent elective pediatric surgeries in February and March 2024. Results: The data revealed a high prevalence of thirst in the postoperative period, exacerbated by factors such as prolonged fasting, use of anesthetics, and otorhinolaryngological procedures. The nursing team played a crucial role in thirst management, employing strategies such as ice pops, menthol spray, and lip moisturizer, which provided relief and comfort to patients. However, a gap in pre-anesthetic guidance regarding the protocol was identified, highlighting the need for greater multidisciplinary involvement in preparing caregivers. Conclusion: Training healthcare professionals and implementing preventive measures, such as reducing fasting time, are essential to improving children's postoperative experience. The importance of optimized protocols, a humanized approach, and interdisciplinary action is emphasized to ensure safe and effective care. Additionally, further research is necessary to enhance the visibility of nursing as a key player in patient care.
