Abstract: The view of palliative care (PC) in the world has changed over theyears. It is recognized that it relieves suffering, controls symptoms, improves quality of life and care. The objective of this research was tocompare the level of knowledge about palliative care among medical and non-medical professionals in an oncological hospital in western Paraná. Cross-sectional, exploratory, descriptive study, with theapplication of a semi-structured and self-administered questionnairethrough the Google Forms® platform. The survey was answered byhealth professionals working in an oncological hospital in the city ofCascavel-PR. Sociodemographic questions and an adaptation of thePalliative Care Knowledge Test were part of the instrument. Duringthe period studied, 30 professionals answered the questionnaire. Regarding demographic characteristics, 19 (63.3%) were female and11 (36.5%) were male. Most participants were aged between 31-40 years (43.3%). The study population consisted of physicians (63%) and non-physicians (37%). When the Palliative Care Knowledge Test was applied, it was possible to observe that on average 87% ofmedical professionals answered correctly and 63% of non-medical professionals had this correct rate. Since, the average of allparticipants was a hit rate of 86% related to philosophy, 81% oncommunication, 72% directed to aspects of the end of life and 61% answered correctly regarding pain management. Individuals with theshortest experience obtained results (80%) similar to those with thelongest time (82%). However, when we evaluated the parameterrelated to the type of training, individuals who reported not havingspecific training in CP obtained a 50% accuracy rate, those with basictraining 85% and those with intermediate training correctly answered91% of the test. In this context, the study suggests that regardless ofthe length of professional experience, continuous training should beapplied so that the PC domains are understood and consequentlyimplemented in practice.
