Abstract: Cerebral palsy (CP), also known as chronic non-progressive encephalopathy of childhood, is a group of disorders affecting movement and postural development, resulting in limitations in daily activities due to non-progressive brain damage. Individuals with CP face challenges in communication, sensory processing, and cognition, with motor impairment being the primary characteristic. Abnormal muscle tone contributes to issues with motor coordination, balance, and postural control. The study aimed to evaluate the muscle tone of the lower limbs and the functional activities of children and adolescents with CP. It was a cross-sectional study conducted in a physiotherapy and occupational therapy laboratory in Recife, Brazil. Participants completed a questionnaire covering personal data, socioeconomic status, education, family income, and lifestyle. A specific protocol for assessing muscle tone and functional activities was applied, evaluating muscle tone evolution, independence, and postural control. Results indicated a male predominance (65.38%) and quadriparesis as the main topography (53.85%). In response to passive stretching, most patients showed grades 2 or 10, indicating varied reactions to stretching. In static functional activities, 34.6% of patients maintained posture without assistance. However, in dynamic functional activities, most did not perform the activities. The research highlights the scarcity of studies using the same protocol to assess muscle tone and functional activities in individuals with CP, suggesting the need for further investigations in this field. The application of the presented protocols is of great importance for advancing knowledge and improving therapeutic interventions for children and adolescents with cerebral palsy.
