Abstract: The access to sanitation is a right guaranteed by the national constitution. However, a large part of population still doesn’t have access to this resource. In this regard, became necessary alternatives to water disinfection. The plant Maranta arundinacea, popularly known as Araruta, has several socially known applications, can be used since cooking, in many recipes, until even in medicines, preventing infections and inflammations. Therefore, the objective of this work is to evaluate the potential microbicide of many different concentrations of leaf and rhizome extract of the plant M. arundinacea against heterotrophic bacteria in water for supply. After prepared, the extract from the leaf and the rhizome, had been tested the concentrations 1:1, 1:2 and 2:1, in addition the negative (just water) and positive (just extract) controls. The technic used was Pour Plate in medium of culture NA. The Petri plats has remained in BOD at 28°C for 48h. In sequence, the UFC’s had been counted and the analyses carried out. Had been watched the reduction in the counted of the UFC/mL in every dilution tested, when compare to the negative control (just water). The dilution with biggest reduction, for both, leaf and rhizome, was the 1:1, with approximate valor of 90%. When compered the extracts, watched biggest efficiency of reduction in rhizome extract. Stands out, yet, the preservation of the microbicide power of the extract aqueous, facilitating prepare and becoming a possible alternative for disinfection of water for human supply.
