Abstract: To analyze and discuss the prevalence of cognitive dysfunction in elderly people with dementia, its specific features, as well as new therapies in use in the last year. Bibliographic review: This literature review addresses various approaches to the treatment and diagnosis of cognitive impairment and dementia, highlighting both non-pharmacological and pharmacological therapies in the last year. The pathophysiology of these conditions is discussed, highlighting the involvement of different specific areas and subcortical structures. The diagnostic difficulties and some specifications of such a condition are also discussed in this review. The discussion of non-pharmacological therapies stands out as the most promising ones studied in the last year, whether behavioral, minimally invasive or alternative medicine. Final Considerations: Dementia is a public health concern due to its prevalence and negative impact on patients' quality of life and social cycle, as well as the complex challenges of diagnosis and treatment. Although traditional pharmacological approaches focus primarily on delaying symptoms, emerging non-pharmacological approaches show promise in preserving cognitive function and improving quality of life. Despite this, advanced advances are being made in understanding and treating these conditions, with the development of innovative interventions.
