Abstract: The plastic packaging sector is one of the main contributors to the total production of plastic, most of which comes from non-renewable, non-biodegradable sources. Given this problem, the use of biopolymers combined with reinforcements to create nanocomposites that can compete with conventional plastics has been discussed. The objective of this article was to produce biodegradable plastic films with mechanical properties similar to traditional plastics. To achieve this, graphene oxide (GO) was dispersed using the casting technique into a biopolymeric matrix made of thermoplastic starch (TPS) to obtain films with good mechanical properties. The synthesis of GO was carried out using the modified Hummers method, and SEM and FTIR techniques were employed for material characterization. The first technique revealed a sheet-like structure, while the second showed the presence of oxygenated groups, confirming the synthesis of GO. The bionanocomposites produced were reinforced with 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, and 2.0% GO and characterized in terms of thickness, opacity, graphene oxide dispersion, and load resistance time. The dispersion of GO in TPS was evaluated through SEM, which showed that the films containing 0.5% and 2.0% graphene oxide formed a single phase, while films with 1.0% and 1.5% GO exhibited small needle-like structures.
