Abstract: In order to ensure the efficiency of a drug, ANVISA has established standards regulating good quality control practices in the pharmaceutical industry, so that it can prove and meet the principles of purity, efficacy, activity and safety. Ibuprofen is part of the list of Non-Prescription Medicines and is included in the National List of Essential Medicines established by the Federal Government and can be easily found in pharmacies throughout Brazil. Classified in the category of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, it has analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antipyretic properties and is recommended for adult and pediatric use, making it one of the most consumed drugs in the world, with around 30 million consumers. The aim of this study was to investigate the quality of Ibuprofen tablets and capsules sold in a school pharmacy in the city of Irecê-Bahia. Three brands of ibuprofen tablets and soft capsules were purchased and their qualities were assessed using in vitro tests according to the Brazilian Pharmacopoeia 6th ed. The samples analyzed were within specifications for all physicochemical tests. The results showed that all the brands had good drug release at the absorption site and may have good bioavailability. However, the dosage test for the capsules was lower than specified, suggesting interference in the way the samples were prepared and not in the chromatographic analysis. Therefore, it can be concluded that the ibuprofen tablets sold at the school pharmacy in the city of Irecê-BA, despite showing slight variations in their physicochemical qualities, may be pharmaceutically equivalent.
