Abstract: Toxoplasmosis is a worldwide parasitic infection caused by the parasite Toxoplasma gondii. When associated with the central nervous system, it is called neurotoxoplasmosis (NTX). The drugs currently used for treatment are Pyrimethamine and Sulfadiazine, but research has shown that Nitazoxanide (NTZ) shows promising results for treating the infection in both its acute and chronic phases. The aim of this study was, by means of a literature review, to assess the toxicity of Nitazoxanide, a drug used as an alternative treatment for neurotoxoplasmosis, with a view to seeking in vivo tests, mainly on Zebrafish. This is a literature review and scientific articles were read and searched on the PubMed, SciELO and LILACS platforms. Six articles related to the desired theme were found and three of these were used in the end. However, there is not a great variety of studies on the toxicity of this drug, so it is extremely important for public health to carry out a toxicological analysis of this medication, which could be an effective alternative form of treatment for neurotoxoplasmosis.
