Abstract: Solid waste, generated on a large scale and with a short useful life, has become an increasingly frequent object of study in countries, cities and institutions. Proper management of this waste is one of the ways to minimize related environmental impacts and promote environmental balance and quality. Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) represent public spaces that can become examples of environments where environmental management is carried out in accordance with environmental legislation and technical standards. In this context, the present work aimed to identify, quantify and classify solid waste at the State University of Pará (UEPA) - Campus VIII/Marabá. This research, of an exploratory nature and qualitative and quantitative in nature, was based on the analysis of gravimetric composition and daily per capita generation. Furthermore, it compared the results with other HEIs, classified them according to the National Solid Waste Policy (PNRS), regulated by Law 12.305/10, the National Environmental Council (CONAMA) nº 307/2002 and the Brazilian Association of Standards Techniques, through Brazilian Standard (NB) 10.004/04, and solid waste management strategies were proposed. The data obtained from the gravimetric composition analysis revealed the following distribution of waste: Organic (49.9%), Paper/Cardboard (23.01%), Plastic (13.55%), Waste (8.74%), Glass (2.47%), Metal (1.29%), Hazardous (0.70%), and Electronic (0.63%). Daily per capita generation was estimated at 0.015 kg/inhabitant/day. In comparison with other HEIs in the state of Pará, the gravimetric composition values indicate that UEPA - Campus VIII/Marabá has similar results to other campuses of the same university. However, the values of per capita generation of solid waste show that UEPA - Campus VIII/Marabá has one of the lowest per capita generations among the institutions analyzed, when compared to UEPA campuses and HEIs in other states. The classification of solid waste indicates that, according to Law 12,305/10, it indicates that most types of solid waste generated in the institution are classified as dangerous. According to CONAMA 307/2002, the majority of waste was not classified, while according to ABNT, by NBR 10.004/2004, the majority was classified as Class I, hazardous waste. This work points to the lack of selective collection preventing the reuse and recycling of other categories of waste, highlighting the urgency of a Solid Waste Management Plan (PGRS). Despite the low daily per capita generation, the implementation of environmental education projects can improve this aspect.
