Abstract: Toxoplasmosis is caused by the obligate intracellular protozoan Toxoplasma gondii and is one of the most prevalent cosmopolitan parasitic infections in humans. Toxoplasmosis can affect several systems, such as the lymphatic, cardiorespiratory and, mainly, the nervous system, causing neurotoxoplasmosis. A therapeutic regimen consisting of the combination of the drugs Sulfadiazine and Pyrimethamine is used to treat neurotoxoplasmosis. This treatment generally results in success rates of between 80% and 90% of cases; however, it can cause adverse effects. Based on this, this study evaluated the embryotoxicity of different concentrations of Pyrimethamine and Sulfadiazine in Danio rerio embryos. The results of the study showed that embryos exposed to the combination of Pyrimethamine and Sulfadiazine had the lowest survival rates, especially at a concentration of 0.125x10-5mg of Pyrimethamine combined with a concentration of 0.812x10-4mg of Sulfadiazine (40% survival). Regarding the exposure of the drugs in isolation, a higher survival rate was observed in the group exposed to Pyrimethamine, reaching up to 90% survival. Thus, the importance of evaluating the toxicity of drugs in various animal models is highlighted, in order to identify possible changes caused by the active ingredients and different concentrations of the drugs.
