Abstract: In Brazil, the consumption of contaminated groundwater has been associated with several health problems. This study aimed to evaluate the quality of water obtained from deep tube wells and distributed to the population of the urban area around the Federal Institute of Maranhão (IFMA) in the city of Timon-MA, Brazil. Microbiological parameters (total coliforms and Escherichia coli) were determined using the Colilert Enzymatic Chromogenic Substrate method. Total hardness was determined using the complexation titration technique. Further, it was determined whether the obtained values met the standards established by the Consolidation Ordinance No. 888/2021 of the Ministry of Health and CONAMA Resolution No. 396/2008. Samples collected from volunteer residences in six neighbourhoods were in accordance with the potability standards. However, total coliform counts in samples from the tube well and the school drinking fountains did not comply with the current legislation, posing a health risk to the users. Additionally, according to data obtained from questionnaires administered to volunteers, 83.33% of respondents reported itchy skin and described unpleasant sensory characteristics regarding the taste, smell, and colour of water. The findings highlight the need to adopt public policies capable of reducing groundwater pollution in the municipality.
