Abstract: Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic autoimmune inflammatory disease that can cause joint and systemic damage, including gastrointestinal disorders. Physical exercise has shown favorable results as a non-pharmacological approach to managing the disease. This study investigated the effects of rheumatoid arthritis and resistance exercise on the neuronal density of the general myenteric population in the jejunum of Wistar rats. The animals were distributed into the following groups: control (CON); rheumatoid arthritis (AR); preventive-exercise (EP); and EP subjected to rheumatoid arthritis (EPAR). Both EP and EPAR groups underwent a progressive stair-climbing resistance exercise for nine weeks, while arthritis was induced using Complete Freund's Adjuvant on animals of AR and EPAR groups. Jejunal samples were subjected to Giemsa staining, and a quantitative examination of the myenteric general population density was performed using images captured with photomicroscope. Animals in the EPAR group showed decreased body weight, while EP group showed decreased visceral fat compared to control group. Although, no significant differences between groups were observed in intestinal size and myentericneuronal density. Further investigations are needed to confirm whether the intestinal function was preserved.
