Abstract: School assessment is an essential mechanism for evaluating students' performance, learning, and development. However, in many public schools, teachers limit themselves to administering tests and exams as the only assessment tools, which can lead to student demotivation due to an overly traditional and grade-focused system. Within this context, this study aimed to analyze the assessment practices of teachers at an elementary school II located in the municipality of Jardim, Ceará, Brazil. To achieve this, interviews were conducted with the teachers, addressing their pedagogical approaches and the assessment strategies used in the classroom. The results indicate that, in the investigated institution, teachers use assessment as a mediating tool, often guiding pedagogical planning and teaching dynamics. It is concluded, therefore, that it is crucial for all educators to understand assessment not just as a measurement instrument but as an ongoing resource to monitor and promote meaningful student learning.
