Abstract: This paper reports the evaluation of the altimetric accuracy of different Digital Terrain Models (DTMs) in Pelotas/Rio Grande do Sul city, focusing on flood modelling. MDT is defined as a three-dimensional mathematical digital representation that describes the characteristics of the Earth’s surface. MDTs are essential for diverse applications such as urban planning, civil engineering, agriculture, geology, water resources management and flood forecasting. The study evaluated two DTMs, called Geo Pelotas and Geo URB, focusing on cartographic accuracy, using the Cartographic Accuracy Standard (CAS) and the Technical Specifications for Geospatial Data Sets Products (TS-GDSP). Statistical tests were carried out to evaluate the bias and precision of DTMs, based on altimetric checkpoints. The results indicated that the DTM URB presented better accuracy, falling into class A of the ET-PCDG, while the DTM Geo Pelotas did not achieved the accuracy criteria, falling into class D. Furthermore, the analysis of discrepancies elevation and the chi-square test showed that the DTM URB is more accurate compared to Geo Pelotas one, which is crucial for identifying flood areas with high realibility. The research concluded that MDT URB is suitable for delimiting flood areas at centimeter level, while the DTM Geo Pelotas is more suitable for characterizing the relief in small-scale mapping.
