Abstract: This is a review of contemporary literature that seeks to understand the theme of self-injury in adolescence from the point of view of psychoanalytic theory. The objective of this research is to present the state of the art on the subject of self-injury in adolescents, focusing on what the literature brings about the family, self-injurious behaviors and possible clinical managements. For this, we used the descriptive exploratory literature review method. We search for works from the year 1992 to October 2021, in reliable databases, such as: Scielo, Portal Capes, BVS and Google Scholar. We consider that the vast majority of articles portray the importance of the family during the adolescent's development phase and the importance of interaction and communication between the adolescent and the environment in which he is inserted. With regard to the subject of self-injury, the literature presents different modalities, such as: self-cutting and scarification. Finally, the literature demonstrates a diversity of tools for clinical management in the treatment of self-injurious behaviors, however the authors converge on the idea that in all forms of self-injury there is a suffering adolescent who wants to speak, be heard and delimit his space in the world.
