Abstract: SUMMARY INTRODUCTION: Globally evaluate the aspects inherent to patients with autism, their main signs and symptoms and levels. METHODOLOGY: This is a literature review, of a narrative type, which aims to describe autism and its levels, from a theoretical point of view, through materials that have already been published on the topic in question, through analysis and interpretation of the literature. The inclusion criteria were: articles in Portuguese and English; published between 2020 and 2024 and which addressed the themes proposed for this research, review-type studies made available in full. DISCUSSION: Autism is a behaviorally defined disorder that is the endpoint of several organic etiologies. The number of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders is increasing for several reasons. A diagnosis of autism can safely be made between 2 and 3 years of age. Autism does not meet screening criteria, but surveillance is recommended during the preschool years. Diagnosis is made through history taking, focusing on developmental history and systematically investigating core behaviors, and by observation in several. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: The care applied to patients with autism spectrum disorder must contain crucial elements such as listening, understanding and applying important behaviors for the evolution of the person with ASD, regardless of the level of complexity and commitment of the person. It is professional and the family must maintain the care and a holistic vision, analyzing the individual as a whole and applying good ways of forming ethics to promote progress in limiting each person with autism spectrum disorder. The autistic individual, immediately after his diagnosis, must be surrounded by people willing to help him understand the spectrum, the interdisciplinary team with psychic, occupational therapies and clinical assistance positively facilitate the way of dealing with ASD.
