Abstract: Biological aging is linked to the reduction of muscle mass and this can be enhanced by a less active lifestyle. There was a relationship between physical activity combined with sedentary behavior and factors associated with reduced muscle mass in the elderly. This is a cross-sectional study with elderly aged ≥ 60 years who scored ≥12 points on the Mini Mental State Examination. Sociodemographic information, level of physical activity, sedentary behavior, muscle mass, presence of diabetes mellitus, depressive symptoms, sleep time, smoking and alcoholism were collected. To determine the Prevalence Ratio, Poisson Regression was performed. The variables that presented p ≤0.20 in the crude analysis were included in the adjusted model, where p<0.05 and 95%CI were adopted as significant. In the multivariate analysis, the factors that remained associated were age ≥70 years, having diabetes mellitus, sleep duration ≤ 7 hours/day, tobacco use, being insufficiently active and having low CS and being sufficiently active with high CS. The findings of the present investigation demonstrate that there are different sociodemographic factors, health conditions and behavioral habits that are related to the decrease in muscle mass. Furthermore, the adoption of a more active lifestyle could contribute to the reduction of health problems and healthier aging.
