Abstract: Lectins are naturally occurring proteins or glycoproteins that exhibit high affinity and specificity for carbohydrates, playing crucial roles in several biological processes. This work explores the biological activity of lectins, with emphasis on their antimicrobial, antitumor, immunomodulatory and antiangiogenic properties. In addition, their potential application in therapies against cancer, infectious diseases and as tools in biotechnology and diagnostics is highlighted. The ability of lectins to selectively interact with glycoconjugates on the cell surface positions them as promising molecules in studies of molecular mechanisms and in the development of new therapeutic agents.
