Abstract: Patients with mental disorders face numerous challenges, including difficult access to dental care. These patients exhibit certain unique risk behaviors that lead not only to the onset of chronic diseases but also to changes in the oral cavity, compared to the general population. Dentists play a fundamental role in the process of adherence to health care in individuals with mental disorders. Therefore, this research aimed to analyze, through the literature, the main aspects and challenges related to dental care for patients with mental disorders. A narrative review of the literature was conducted. The search yielded four articles in PubMed, 96 in CAPES, and nine articles in the LILACS database. Following the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 10 articles were selected for analysis in this review. The 10 studies reveal that public dental care faces significant challenges when it comes to dealing with patients with mental disorders. This is due to the professionals' lack of preparation and specific training to deal with this population, as well as a lack of awareness of the special needs of these patients, impacting the care provided to individuals with mental disorders. They may, in turn, face additional barriers to necessary dental care, leading to a worsening of their oral and general health. Raising dental professionals' awareness and understanding of the different mental disorders and their implications in the context of dental care, implementing training and development programs to recognize and address the special needs of these patients, promoting interdisciplinary partnerships between dentists and mental health professionals, and adopting individualized and patient-centered approaches are essential measures to ensure inclusive, compassionate, and quality dental care for this population.
