Abstract: Prenatal care constitutes a fundamental strategy for reducing maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality, being recognized as an important indicator of health service quality in Brazil. The objective of this study was to analyze the importance of prenatal care in preventing health complications, identifying historical milestones, main preventable conditions, and strategies for strengthening care provision. A narrative literature review was conducted using scientific articles published between 2020 and 2025, selected from recognized scientific databases. Studies addressing prenatal care in Primary Health Care were analyzed, focusing on historical aspects, ministerial guidelines, preventable conditions, and organizational challenges. Results demonstrated significant advances in prenatal care coverage, evolving from more than 10% of pregnant women without consultations in 1995 to 2.2% in 2015. Temporal analysis between 2013 and 2019 revealed growth in the proportion of women who received guidance about delivery referral services (75% to 83%), syphilis testing (66% to 79%), and HIV testing (95% to 99%). However, challenges persist related to late initiation of prenatal care, regional inequalities, and inadequacy of care aspects. Overcoming these challenges demands professional qualification, infrastructure improvement, and strengthening of care network integration. This study contributes to the enhancement of maternal and child health public policies and to the qualification of prenatal care in the Brazilian Unified Health System.
