Abstract: Cancer is a chronic and progressive pathology that is currently the second leading cause of death in Brazil according to data from the National Cancer Institute (INCA). This is a disease that, when diagnosed at an advanced stage, has no therapeutic response, making it essential to include palliative care in the care model due to its differentiated and effective approach to patient care at this stage. The objective of this research is to review the literature on the role of nursing in caring for terminally ill cancer patients. A literature review was carried out in a descriptive-exploratory manner through searches of scientific articles, books and websites of the Ministry of Health, using the descriptors: Palliative Care, Neoplasms, Nursing Care, Palliative Care Nursing at the End of Life and Ill Terminal, found in the Google Scholar database, which point out that the high mortality rate from cancer demonstrates the need to implement palliative care in the nursing care model for terminally ill patients, as it is the nurse who is in direct contact with the patient experiencing the terminal phase with them, making it necessary to respect their autonomy and give dignity to life. Furthermore, it is important to maintain adequate communication with patients and family members. To this end, it is essential that professional nurses are qualified and always improving their technical-scientific knowledge, as well as their perception of the needs of clients with terminal cancer, aiming to provide quality care.
