Abstract: This study aims to examine the power relations between peasants and rulers, based on the work of Eric Wolf. The focus is on the appropriation of surplus, the subordination of peasants to elites, and the strategies of resistance developed throughout history. The research also analyzes the influence of agri-food systems and capitalism on the disintegration of the peasant world, which led to the transition from subsistence-oriented production to profit-driven cultivation. The methodology is based on a literature review of Wolf's major works, such as Peasant Wars of the Twentieth Century and Europe and the People Without History, with the objective of identifying key concepts that elucidate the power asymmetry between peasants and dominant elites. By investigating these mechanisms of domination and forms of peasant resistance, the study draws parallels with contemporary family farming and suggests new approaches for future research in this field.
