Abstract: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neuropsychiatric condition that affects the development of communication, social behavior and social interaction in people diagnosed with autism. Risperidone is a second-generation antipsychotic used in various psychiatric conditions, including ASD, and is widely used in these patients, but its short and long-term use can result in several side effects. This bibliographical survey aimed to describe the side effects caused by the use of risperidone and its toxicological reactions in the body, including weight gain and the consequences of this high BMI index, impacts on dopamine regulation and extrapyramidal effects. This is an integrative bibliographic review being carried out in the Pubmed, Virtual Health Library (VHL) and Sciense Direct databases. In the periods from 2013 to 2023, using the descriptors autism, risperidone, Autistic Disorder and toxicology in Portuguese, English and Spanish and combined by the Boolean “AND”. The results highlighted information about the adverse effects and toxicity of risperidone in individuals with autism, making this information more accessible to students and professionals interested in the topic, expanding knowledge on the subject.
