Abstract: Pine nut harvesting is a traditional activity of significant socioeconomic, cultural, and environmental importance for the southern region of Brazil. This research analyzes the socioeconomic aspects of this production chain, integrating a regional perspective with an in-depth case study in the municipality of Guarapuava, Paraná. The study employs a mixed-methods approach based on the analysis of secondary data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), a literature review, and a synthesis of two studies conducted as part of this research, involving interviews with farmers in Guarapuava. Regionally, results demonstrate that Paraná is the country’s largest producer, with the southern region accounting for 70% of Brazilian production, characterized by seasonality and annual fluctuations. Locally, in Guarapuava, family farming emerges as a key sector, responsible for 72.3% of farms and 68.8% of municipal production, serving as a vital source of supplementary income, with selling prices ranging from BRL 8 to 10 per kilo. The study concludes that the pine nut production chain is a strategic pillar for sustainable rural development, reconciling income generation for family farmers with the conservation of Araucaria angustifolia. However, realizing its full potential depends on overcoming challenges such as informality, limited value addition, and a lack of structured public policies.
