Abstract: One of the types of physical exercise that is becoming increasingly popular is bodybuilding. The motivations for seeking this practice are diverse, among the ones that stand out the most are: search for quality of life, which includes (improved sleep control, anxiety control, stress reduction, improved body posture, in addition to preventing diseases such as diabetes, heart problems), aesthetic improvements to the body. The objective of this study was to identify and describe the aspects of motivation that encourage people between 40 and 60 years old to practice physical exercise, and to identify factors that discourage this group from remaining in long-term environments where physical exercise is practiced. The exploratory research, with a qualitative approach, the research was fueled by the search in the corresponding databases: Pubmed, Google Scholar and Capes Periodicals (Coordination for Personal Improvement of Higher Education), between the months of August to October 2023. For the information collection, the following search descriptors were used: Physical activity for adults and elderly people; Physical exercise and motivation; Physical activity and aging; Gym and motivation. 76 results were found, 46 were unrelated to the topic, 30 were selected because they were close to the research topic, 9 were automatically excluded because they were research on high-performance training or children's bodybuilding or because they had a lower year of publication. pre- established in the exclusion criteria, leaving 21 original studies. It is concluded that the most relevant factor for entering a training program is the search for improving or maintaining health and the most important factor for maintaining this program are social factors such as reducing stress and socialization.
