Abstract: Regional conditions and the adaptability of animals are important aspects in production systems. Different breeds and crosses are explored in dairy cattle farming in Northeast Brazil. Choosing the breed according to suitability and location helps small producers to minimize losses, making the activity more sustainable. Cows of dairy breeds such as Holstein, Jersey and Brown Swiss are classified as taurine and are characterized by their adaptability to regions with a mild climate, while the Gir and Guzerá breeds are classified as zebu, adapted to regions with a warmer climate. In this contexto, there are also synthetic breeds, such as Girolando and Guzolado, obtained from crossing pure breeds. This chapter aims to discuss important points about the morphological differences of the main breeds and crosses of dairy cows, making it possible to direct production according to the producer's objective, enabling the activity and identifying animals with desired characteristics in northeastern herds.
