Abstract: Beta-lactams represent a broad group of antimicrobials, including penicillins, carbapenems, and cephalosporins. Cephalosporins are the most indicated beta-lactams for certain hospital-acquired infections, such as complicated urinary tract infections, meningitis, and infectious conditions in pregnant women. However, acquired resistance to these drugs is continuously progressing, leading to the emergence of carbapenems with the aim of improving this profile. These drugs are classified into generations based on the expansion of their spectrum of action, namely, on the characteristics of their antimicrobial activity.
