Abstract: Paratuberculosis is caused by Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis is a chronic, incurable infectious disease that mainly affects ruminants. The present research aimed to describe the main etiological, clinical-epidemiological, pathological and laboratory characteristics of this disease, as well as the therapeutic, prophylactic and control measures for paratuberculosis in domestic ruminants. To this end, a narrative literature review was developed based on scientific articles, dissertations, theses, websites, event annals and animal health guides. It was found that this is a worldwide disease that constitutes an important socioeconomic, public and animal health problem due to the economic losses it can cause and also due to its zoonotic potential. Therefore, appropriate preventive and control measures are essential to minimize infections, thus ensuring human and animal health.
