Abstract: In various engineering projects, the construction of retaining structures is often necessary. Among the available solutions, retaining walls are commonly used, especially in small to medium-scale constructions. Considering these aspects, this study aimed to clarify the criteria and parameters that should be considered in the design of retaining walls. Through the analysis of theories and equations proposed by other authors, this bibliographic research introduces the necessary calculations related to determining acting loads and verifying the stability of conventional concrete retaining walls. It was observed that the use of Rankine's theory for calculating both active and passive earth pressures provides effective results for this type of design. Moreover, stability checks for sliding, overturning, bearing capacity failure, and global stability are essential to ensure the safety of the soil mass. Based on the findings, this study can support students and professionals in developing projects for conventional concrete retaining walls and contributes to the proper construction of these containment structures.
