Abstract: Introduction: Proton therapy offers advanced techniques for treating various types of neoplasms, including those close to tissues and organs considered to be radiosensitive. The advantage of proton therapy is related to the physical behavior of the interaction of protons that are accelerated with the target material. Currently, the difficulty of the technique and its high cost have been crucial to the slow proliferation of proton therapy around the world. Objective: The aim of this study was to deepen scientific knowledge about the physics and mechanics of proton therapy and to compare it with radiotherapy. It is therefore classified as a qualitative literature review. Materials and Methods: In this study, a bibliographic review was carried out with research based on subjects related to proton therapy through digital collections such as Google Scholar, Scielo (Scientific Electronic Library Online), scientific articles, dissertations and theses. Results: Radiotherapy was the first method of treating tumors in the most delicate regions of the human body. Photon beam treatment consists of destroying tumor and cancer cells using ionizing radiation, or preventing the neoplasm from growing and reproducing. Proton therapy has the physics to ensure that the radiation dose reaches only the tumor, exposing the patient to the lowest possible risks, to ensure that the treatment does not reach areas beyond what is necessary. Conclusion: Proton therapy is more suitable than radiotherapy for treatments in which the tumor is close to noble anatomical structures, such as head and neck tumors.
