Abstract: The present research aimed to present the state of knowledge on the topic History of Special Education in scientific articles from the online Scientific Electronic Library of periodicals Scientific Electronic Library Online SCIELO, in the period from 1998 to 2023, and as specific objectives: understanding the scenario the production of articles; examine the objects of study that have been privileged in research on the topic; identify the theoretical contributions and methodological choices adopted. As for the methodological procedures, it is anchored in the qualitative approach, it is a bibliographical research of the state of knowledge type. The results obtained demonstrate that many articles do not make clear the research methodology, in addition to not informing which theoretical and methodological foundations were chosen. Finally, I draw attention to the fact that even though I found the first research on the topic in Scielo in 1998, it was only from 2016 onwards that the topic began to have greater circulation in the scientific journal, inferring that interest in the topic presents discontinuities, in addition to having a reduced number of publications.
