As organizações missionárias protestantes na América Latina e seu ideário político
O trabalho versa sobre a chegada na América Latina dos primeiros missionários protestantes, ocorrida mais sistematicamente no séc. XX. Antes houveram iniciativas esporádicas e localizadas, devido à forte herança católica dos colonizadores. A partir da Doutrina de Monroe, decidiu-se dedicar maior atenção à AL, cabendo aos Estados Unidos essa tarefa. Os primeiros trabalhos missionários foram realizados com povos indígenas, vistos como pagãos. As missões protestantes que se fixaram na AL trouxeram o ideário fundamentalista da Direita Religiosa, priorizando o combate ao comunismo e à Teologia da Libertação e se aliando aos regimes ditatoriais. Objetivamos demonstrar a confluência de interesses entre as ditaduras militares e as organizações missionárias religiosas na luta anticomunismo no passado, bem como na atualidade, quando o “fantasma” do comunismo volta a assombrar o continente latino-americano.

Abstract:
The work deals with the arrival in Latin America of the first Protestant missionaries, which occurred more systematically in the century. XX. Before there were sporadic and localized initiatives, due to the strong Catholic heritage of the colonizers. Based on the Monroe Doctrine it was decided to dedicate more attention to LA, leaving the United States to this task. The first missionary work was carried out with indigenous peoples, seen as pagans. The Protestant missions that settled in LA brought the fundamentalist ideology of the Religious Right, prioritizing the fight against communism and Liberation Theology and allying themselves with dictatorial regimes. We aim to demonstrate the confluence of interests between military dictatorships and religious missionary organizations in the anti-communist struggle in the past, as well as today, when the “ghost” of communism once again haunts the Latin American continent.
